Chapter Thirty-Three
Gloomy dark clouds had swarmed across the sky, threatening to drown anyone not hiding away indoors. Carl was one of those people. He stood at the corner of a row of shops, the damp cool air making him shiver, as he shuffled his feet. He hoped the rain would hold off, as he wasnât dressed appropriately for a downpour.
As the first few drops landed around him, he pulled his hood over his head. It would keep his hair and neck from getting soaked for a while. He dug his hands deep into his coat pocket, praying for the activity heâd been waiting for, for over ten minutes now.
His prayers were answered as the door heâd been watching swung open. A man Carl didnât recognise strode away, not caring to close the door behind him, as the return spring did its work.
Carl sprinted light-footed to the door and caught it before it closed. He slipped in and tip-toed up the stairs to Jimmy Priceâs flat. He tapped on the door, hearing a voice calling out, âWhaddya want now?â The door opened and Carl walked into the flat, gently pushing Jimmy backwards to make space inside.
Price swore. âYa canna just walk in here without a warrant. Iâve got rights.â
âShut up, Jimmy. I donât need a warrant to have a chat with a friend.â Carlâs reputation relied on him gaining Priceâs cooperation. âLook, Jimmy, Iâm after some information about one of your customers.â
âWhat do you mean, customers?â Price said, his eyebrows crunching together. âYou know I donât deal anymore.â
âIf I search your flat, then Jimmy, I wonât find any drugs?â
âNo. I told you. I donât do that stuff anymore. Hated being in jail last time. Iâve no inclination to spend more time there. Iâm going straight now.â
Carl believed that Jimmy had hated prison but wasnât inclined to believe his going straight declaration. âPerhaps I might believe you, Jimmy. Maybe I wonât perform a search. But Iâd be more inclined to walk away and let you get about your business if you can help me with my enquiries.â
âWhaddya want to know?â
âThereâs a woman lives around here. Bit of a big shot. We know sheâs a cocaine user. I just want to know whoâs most likely to be her supplier. If you can steer me in the right direction, Iâll leave you be.â
Carl knew Price had not been into supplying cocaine in the past and he evidently wasnât now, because heâd be driving something like a six series BMW if he was into big money drugs, rather than the rusting old banger parked around the back of the flats. Jimmyâs products had been cannabis, barbiturates and ecstasy.
âListen. Iâve never sold that shit. And I donât know who does. The supply chain for that stuff is serious crime. Scary people.â
âDonât give me that, Jimmy,â Carl said condescendingly. âYou might not have dealt in cocaine yourself, but you know who does. If you donât help me out here. Iâll be forced to conduct a search.â
âListen. You never heard it from me,â Price responded nervously.
